Unit 1 - Blog
In letter 4 of Mark Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, he writes about Robert Walton, an arctic explorer on a mission to find a northwest passage, writing to his sister Margaret Saville about his expedition and experiences upon leaving his home. In this specific letter he documents witnessing a man of “gigantic stature” while his ship was stuck in a ice field. Later on they encounter another man floating in the ice and invite him to the ship. Victor Frankenstein, the survivor of the wreck, slowly regains his strength and begins to open up to Walton who believes he is the friend he was hoping to find on his voyage. On page 25, when the crew saw the first man, they described him as a “gigantic stature” that exited the crew ship. It shows that the crew has been on their adventure for an extended amount of time and haven’t witnessed any other interactions with new people. It can also mean that they were excited because they think they are close to land. Victor was later discovered and told his story about how he is looking for the man that fled from him. Knowing that makes me infer that the man he is looking for is the monster they say the day before. I predict that they will soon cross paths with the monster soon or later.
